Scoring, attempts and when an activity is open
Choose when an activity opens and closes, what counts toward the score, how many attempts students get, a pass mark, and when they see the answers.
Scores are set in three places: each question's points, each interaction page in the activity, and the activity's own settings.
Each question
In the question's Marking box, set its Points. 0 means the question is answered but never scored.
Each interaction page
On the Activity tab, select an interaction page. The In this activity box in the panel on the right has three settings. They belong to this activity only, so the same interaction can count differently somewhere else.
- Counts toward the score: switch it off to make the page practice. Students still see right or wrong, but it adds nothing to the score.
- Weight: ×1, ×2 or ×3 multiplies the page's points and what they are out of.
- Finish it before Next: every question must be answered before the next page opens. Off, students see Skip this page, and a skipped question scores nothing.
The activity's settings
Open the Settings tab. Change what you need, then select Save settings.
- When it's open: see the next section.
- Attempts and marking:
- Attempts allowed: 3 to start with, 1, or Unlimited.
- Score that counts: Best attempt, Latest attempt or First attempt.
- Pass mark: a percentage, or empty for none.
- Show the right answers: After each check, At the end, After it closes or Never.
- Look: the Theme, or the default.
About this activity, above them, holds the Title and the Description shown on the start screen, with their own Save button.
When it's open
Every date is optional. With none, the activity is open as soon as it is published and never closes. Times are in your organisation's time zone, shown under the dates.
- Opens: when students can start. Until then, Before it opens decides what they see:
- Shown, with "Opens [date]": the link shows a Not open yet page with the date.
- Hidden until it opens: the same page, with no date.
- Closes: when work stops. After it closes decides what happens next:
- Closed: students cannot open it. Their marks still show where marks show, such as the LMS gradebook.
- Read only: students can open it and see their own work, and nothing saves. Read only from is The close, or A later date: until that date it is closed.
- Keep working: students can go on changing their own copy. That copy is never marked and never sent to an LMS, and they are told so.
At the close, work in progress is handed in as it stands, and that copy is what is marked. It is dated at the close, scored with any unanswered question at 0, and sent to the gradebook like any finished attempt. An attempt with nothing answered is not handed in. The activity tells students when it closes, such as "Closes Saturday 9:00 am", and in the last 24 hours it counts down.
From an LMS, each student's own dates there take over where the LMS has them. In Canvas these are the assignment's Available from and Until dates, with any extension you give in Canvas. Canvas's Due date never closes a Taktyl activity, so Canvas can still take late work.
Extensions
An extension is a later close for one student. Under Extensions on the Settings tab, choose the student and when it closes for them, then select Save extension. Change moves it and Take away removes it.
- It only ever adds time. A date before the activity's own close changes nothing, and if you later move the activity's close past it, the later date wins.
- With Read only, their read-only time moves with their close.
- No reason is asked for or kept. Who gave it and when is in your organisation's audit log.
- Students appear in the list once they have opened the activity. The student sees it as their own close: "Closes Monday 5:00 pm (your extension)".
When a change reaches students
The dates and extensions reach students as soon as you save them, with nothing to publish. Everything else on a live activity shows Unpublished changes when you save it, and students get it when you publish again.
