# Publish an activity, and what students see after a change > Publishing makes a version students can open. Your edits wait until you publish again. Students never see what you are editing. They see the last version you published. An activity is in one of three states, shown beside its title: - **Draft**: never published, or taken down. Students cannot open it. - **Live** with a version number, such as **Live · v2**: students have exactly what you see. - **Unpublished changes**: you have changed something since the last Publish. Students still have the older version. ## Publish 1. Open the activity. 2. Select **Publish** at the top right. When you have changed a live activity, the button says **Publish changes**. Each Publish makes a new version: v1, v2 and so on. A version never changes once it is made. When students already have the newest version, the button says **Published** and does nothing. ## When Publish stops Taktyl will not publish something students could not use. If anything is wrong, Publish opens **Not ready to publish yet** with a list of what to fix, for example: - the activity has no pages; - a quiz has no questions, or a question has no text or no right answer; - a picture has no description and is not marked **Decorative**. **Readiness** in the header shows the same list at any time. ## Links that may not work Before it publishes, Taktyl checks every address in the activity: links in text, videos, sound, captions files and pictures. If one did not answer as it should, **Some links may not work** lists each one, where it is and why: the website said the page is not there, it could not be reached, or it starts with `http://`, which browsers may block inside an embedded activity. Fix them in the editor, or press **Publish anyway**. A link check never stops a Publish on its own. ## Editing an interaction that is in live activities Interactions have no versions of their own. Their content is copied into each activity version when it is published. So an edit to an interaction marks every activity that uses it **Unpublished changes**, and students get the edit only when each activity is published again. In the interaction's editor, **Publish to all** does that for every live activity that uses it, in one step. ## A student in the middle of an attempt A student who started before you published finishes on the version they began with. Their next attempt from the live link uses the newest version. ## Go back to an earlier version Every version is listed under **Share › Every version**. Beside each one: - **Restore** makes that version your draft again. Taktyl asks first. The pages you have now go to the Bin, where you can restore them. Students keep what they have until you publish, and publishing makes a new version: the old ones never change. An interaction another activity also uses is not changed: the restored page gets its own copy. - **Make a copy** makes a new draft activity from that version, beside the original, named with the version, for example "Wrist bones (v2 copy)". It shares nothing with the original. ## Take it down To stop students opening a live activity, choose **Take down…** in the three-dot menu. Every link to it, live or frozen, stops working. Your versions and links are kept, and publishing again opens the same links.
