How students arrive from your LMS, and how marks reach the gradebook
Your LMS signs students in for you, and a finished attempt sends a submission or the score that counts to the gradebook.
This guide explains what happens after you add a Taktyl activity to a course.
Students open it from the course
A student opens the link in your course and the activity opens straight away. The LMS tells Taktyl who they are, so they never see a Taktyl sign-in form and need no password.
The first time someone comes from your LMS, Taktyl makes an account for them. They then appear in your organisation's students list, with LMS as the way they came. The next time, Taktyl finds the same account again.
When you open the link yourself as a teacher, you see the activity as students do, and nothing you do is recorded or counted. A teacher who comes from the LMS and has no place in your organisation yet joins it as a member.
If the activity has never been published, students see a page saying it is not open yet.
Their own dates from the LMS
When a student opens the activity from the LMS, the LMS's dates for that student take over from the activity's own Opens and Closes. In Canvas these are the assignment's Available from and Until dates, with any extension you give that student in Canvas. Canvas's Due date never closes a Taktyl activity, so late work still comes in until the Until date.
Where the LMS has no date, the activity's own date applies. A Canvas connection made before 24 October 2026 sends these dates only after its developer key's configuration is refreshed in Canvas; until then the activity's own dates apply.
Which version they get
You chose this when you added the activity. Live gives the course each new version as soon as you publish it. Frozen keeps it on one version.
Submissions and scores in the gradebook
What reaches the gradebook follows the Gradebook choice you made when you added the activity as an assignment:
- Send a submission: each time a student finishes an attempt, the LMS gets a submission with no score, waiting for you to mark it. You give the mark in the LMS. In Canvas, opening the submission in SpeedGrader shows the student's finished attempts in this course, one interaction at a time, with each answer and the right answers. It also shows every answer they gave on a time line, and Compare shows an earlier answer beside the last. Class figures shows how the class did beside them once 5 or more others have finished, and Print record prints their answers. Only the course's teachers can open it. In an LMS with no grading screen of its own, such as D2L Brightspace, the gradebook's Review opens the same view with a Mark in box: your mark out of 100 and your feedback go straight to the gradebook.
- Send the score: Taktyl sends the score that counts (their best, latest or first finished attempt, as you chose), and the LMS scales it to the column's points.
- Don't use the gradebook: nothing is sent.
Nothing is sent for an attempt that is not finished, or for an activity added somewhere other than an assignment. Each course is separate: an activity in several courses sends each course only the attempts made in it.
Sometimes the LMS refuses a score or a submission, for example when its assignment is closed or deleted. The student's work is still saved in Taktyl. Only the gradebook entry is missing. When this happens:
- the activity's author, its workspace's leaders and your organisation admins are told in their notifications, and
- the activity's Insights tab shows how many scores did not reach the gradebook, with a Retry button.
