Getting started with Claude or ChatGPT
Start small: let your AI app look first, then make one draft, check it, and publish it yourself or ask the app to. Choose whether it sees your students' names.
First, connect your AI app: see Build with Claude or ChatGPT.
Start small
You can stop after any step, and each step is safe on its own.
Two choices when you connect
The Allow screen has two boxes, and both start clear:
- Allow changes to drafts. Ticked, the app can build and change drafts that students cannot reach yet, and publish one when you ask it to. Clear, it can only read.
- Let this AI see students' names. Ticked, the app can see each student's name, attempts, scores and answers on the activities you can open, as you can on an activity's Insights tab. It never sees an email address. Clear, it sees totals only, and any total from fewer than 5 students is held back. What the app sees goes to the company behind it, so check your university's rules first. To change this later, disconnect the app on Account › Integrations, under AI connections, and connect it again.
Step 1: Look
Connect with Allow changes to drafts clear. It can only read. Ask it:
- "List my activities in Taktyl and tell me what's in each one."
- "Which of my activities are still drafts, and what would stop each one being published?"
- "Which questions in my most used quiz do students find hardest?"
Step 2: Make one thing
Disconnect, and connect again with Allow changes to drafts ticked. Ask for one draft, for example "Make a draft activity with a short reading page and a five question quiz on the cardiac cycle." It is a draft: nobody else sees it until you publish it. Open it in Taktyl and check every page, the right answers and the feedback.
Step 3: Put it in front of people
When you are happy with it, publish it. Do it yourself from the activity in Taktyl, or tell the app "Publish Week 3: the hand". The app presses the same Publish button you would, with the same checks: a picture with no description stops it, and it tells you about any links that may not work. The version says it was published through the app, and you get a notification. Then share its link, embed it or add it to your LMS course as you do with any activity. The app publishes only when you ask, and only an activity that has never been published: once students have it, publishing it again stays yours, and so does taking it down.
Changing an activity students already have
The app never changes anything students can reach: an activity that has been published, even one you took down, or an interaction such an activity uses. Ask it to work on a copy instead, for example "Copy Week 3: the hand, and add two harder questions to the quiz in the copy". The copy is a new draft with its own copies of every interaction, so nothing changed in it reaches the live activity. Check the copy in Taktyl, then move the changes over to the live activity yourself and publish it. The app does not change when a published activity opens or closes either: you do that in Taktyl.
Jobs you can hand over
- Nursing. You type "Make a draft drag and drop on the layers of the skin, using the picture skin-layers.png from my library." It finds the picture in your library, builds the activity as a draft, and tells you if the picture still needs a description.
- Law. You type "Add a branching scenario to my draft Negligence: a client who slipped in a shop, three choices at each step." It builds the scenario in the draft, with an ending for each path.
- Languages. You type "Turn this list of 20 French verbs and their meanings into flashcards and a crossword." It makes both from one word list.
- Any subject. You type "Check my draft for anything that would stop me publishing it, and fix what you can." It runs Taktyl's own check and asks you about anything only you can decide, such as a picture's description.
What stays yours
- It acts as you and sees only what you can.
- Check every draft before it is published: the app publishes only when you ask it to.
- Anything students can already reach: the app works on a copy, and you move the changes over.
- You decide whether it sees students' names when you connect it. To change your mind, disconnect it and connect it again.
- You can disconnect it at any time on Account › Integrations.
